(Salesian College, Siliguri) – On , students at Salesian College (Autonomous), Siliguri, launched Eco Prahari, an AI-powered platform that equips existing cameras with environmental monitoring capabilities to protect public spaces.
Developed by the Tech Team of the Radio Club under the banner of Ecology First, the project was conceptualised and led by Anand Kumar, founder of both the Radio Club and Ecology First. The launch was held in the presence of Fr. C. M. Paul, Vice Principal (Sciences) and Director of the Radio Club, along with Dr Prajwal Chettri, Dean of Sciences and coordinator of the institution’s United Board‑supported Green Campus initiatives.
At the launch, Crist Minj demonstrated how Eco Prahari repurposes existing CCTV infrastructure as an active environmental monitoring network. This system enables proactive intervention by learning typical patterns in public spaces, detecting anomalies like littering, and sending automated alerts to prompt action.
“The future of our planet depends on ecological intelligence, not just surveillance. Eco Prahari is our effort to make technology an active guardian of the environment—one that helps communities respond faster, act smarter, and protect shared spaces more effectively,” said Anand Kumar.
Dr Prajwal Chettri added: “Projects such as Eco Prahari demonstrate how innovation, environmental responsibility, and student leadership can come together to create meaningful impact.”
Eco Prahari uses smart computer programs that can see and understand what is happening in camera footage, and it can be used in more places as needed. It could be used outside schools, such as at train stations, public parks, government buildings, or places requiring nature protection.
The initiative reflects a growing culture of student innovation at Salesian College, where previous projects include Everrooted (an ecological intelligence platform), LuvlyU (a youth well‑being digital platform), and a machine‑learning‑based heart attack risk prediction system recognised at regional and national levels.
With Eco Prahari launched on a day dedicated to protecting the planet, Salesian College students delivered a clear message: new environmental guardians may be powered by Artificial Intelligence, advancing stewardship beyond traditional surveillance.
