(Don Bosco College, Golaghat, Assam) – The institution, Don Bosco College, Golaghat, conducted a seven-day NSS Special Camp at Rangajan 3 No. Gaon from June 22 to 28 under the theme “Youth for Environmental Sustainability.”

The camp benefited around 450 youth, villagers, and children from Rangajan and neighbouring areas of Golaghat district, and aimed to foster environmental awareness, social responsibility, and community participation.

The camp was inaugurated at Jibon Jyoti School, Rangajan, by Fr. L. Alayee, Vice Principal of Don Bosco College, with Mr Abhinav Todi, IQAC Coordinator, as Guest of Honour. Both speakers stressed youth leadership, selfless service, and environmental conservation. The inaugural programme included the NSS song and motto, followed by a ceremonial sapling-planting to symbolise the volunteers’ commitment to sustainable development.

Twenty-five NSS volunteers carried out outreach programmes during the week. A household survey of 75 families collected data on education, health, sanitation, occupation, and socio-economic conditions to identify local needs and guide future community interventions.

The volunteers organised a cleanliness drive along the Golaghat–Halmira Road, removing waste from public spaces and educating residents on sanitation and responsible waste disposal. A plantation drive reinforced environmental conservation, with villagers encouraged to nurture the newly planted saplings.

As part of the programme, the NSS Unit observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26 through an awareness campaign. Volunteers engaged with residents, displayed awareness banners, and urged young people to reject substance abuse and help build a drug-free society.

The week-long programme also included recreational activities for nearly 100 village children, promoting teamwork, discipline, confidence, and community bonding through games and group events.

The week-long programme concluded with a valedictory function on June 28, during which volunteers reflected on their experiences, and prizes were distributed to winners of various competitions. NSS Programme Coordinator Marina Lakra thanked the villagers, volunteers, faculty members, and dignitaries for their support, noting that the camp embodied the NSS motto, “Not Me But You,” by nurturing the values of service, teamwork, environmental responsibility, and active citizenship.
