(Institut Supérieur Don Bosco, Togo) – On 20 November 2025, the Don Bosco Higher Institute (ISDB) in Lomé hosted the celebration of the 20th edition of World Philosophy Day. This Day was co-organised with the Togolese Philosophy Society (SoToPhie) and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Lomé. The theme chosen by the organisers this year is: “Philosophy and AI: Contributing to the debate on AI at the service of humanity”. This topic was presented by Professor Bilakani TONYEME, researcher at the University of Lomé, to an audience of professors and students from the University of Lomé and ISDB.
The speaker gave an overview of the situation, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of AI for humans and society. He also called for philosophical reflection on ethics and law in order to promote the development of a charter on the use of AI and data protection laws in African countries. The conference ended with a question and answer session. The numerous questions asked clearly demonstrated the relevance of the topic discussed, namely the place of AI in human life and society.
The lesson learned by the students from this symposium is that while AI offers immense possibilities, it cannot and must never replace critical thinking. The students left very happy to have participated in this symposium.
Founded in 1986, ISDB is an integral part of the Salesian Institutes of Higher Education and Universities (IUS). It trains students in philosophy, education sciences and communication.
