(Dili, Timor Leste) — The Founder Body of the Crystal Institute of Dili invited Fr. George Thadathil, SDB, General Coordinator of the Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS) and Director of ISDB Dili, to explore new possibilities for collaboration between the IUS network and institutions established by Salesian Alumni in the country.

During the visit, Fr. Thadathil outlined the steps and procedures required for strengthening academic ties, emphasizing the potential for deeper cooperation between the Salesian University model and higher education institutions inspired by Don Bosco’s educational system. He was accompanied by Fr. Manuel Pinto, SDB, as both addressed students and later senior faculty responsible for institutional administration.

Strategic Plan for a New Salesian University

A key point of the meeting was the ongoing development of a Strategic Plan for the proposed Salesian University of Timor Leste, which is currently under review for approval and implementation. This marks an important milestone in the country’s growing commitment to Salesian higher education.

A Strong Salesian Legacy in Timor Leste

Timor Leste, with a population that is 96% Catholic, has enjoyed nearly a century of Salesian presence. Throughout this history, Salesians have played a central role in education and nation-building. Among the most notable figures is Salesian Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who was a key leader in the country’s struggle for independence.

Salesian Alumni continue to contribute significantly to Timor Leste’s development, particularly in higher education. Their leadership is evident in the ongoing growth of institutions such as the Crystal Institute.

On 25 November, the Association of Alumni managing the Crystal Institute formally welcomed and honored the IUS Coordinator for his visit and commitment to strengthening collaboration.

The Salesians in Timor Leste are moving forward with plans to elevate ISDB Dili into a full-fledged Salesian University, upgrading its existing programs in Arts and Humanities, Technology, and Agriculture. This evolution aims to offer young people enhanced academic pathways grounded in the Salesian educational mission.
