(ANS – Rome) – The canonization of the first Daughter of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) after the co-founder of the FMA Institute, Saint Mary Domenica Mazzarello, is a joy for the entire Salesian Family and for anyone who shares the missionary spirit and attention to those most in need – traits that characterised her entire life and in particular her service among the sick and indigenous people in Ecuador. With just a few hours to go before Sister Troncatti is solemnly inscribed in the register of saints, here is a reminder of the main events scheduled and the possibilities for attending, even from a distance.
On the morning of Friday, 17 October, at the Holy See Press Office, Via della Conciliazione 54, a ‘Meeting point’ was held with journalists on the canonisations of Sunday, 19 October 2025. The Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, was available to answer questions about Sister Maria Troncatti.
In the afternoon, at the FMA Generalate in Rome, the opening of the celebrations for the canonisation of Sister Troncatti is scheduled with an address by Mother Chiara Cazzuola, Mother General of the FMA, a greeting from the Rector Major, Fr Fabio Attard, a speech by Fr Pier Luigi Cameroni, Postulator General of the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, the testimony of Shuar Juwa Bosco, who was miraculously healed by Sister Troncatti, and an address by Fr Erino Leoni, Vice-Provincial of the Lombardy-Emilia Province, Italy (ILE) and curator, together with Bro. Paolo Zini, SDB, of an exhibition on Sister Troncatti. The afternoon will be rounded off with the screening of the video ‘…si cambierà in gioia’ (transformed into joy) showing the key stages in the life of the now Saint and singing by the novices of the FMA International Novitiate in Castel Gandolfo..
The event, starting at 5:00 p.m. (UTC+2), will be broadcast live on the FMA Institute’s YouTube channel (and on its language channels in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese).
‘Vamos! In festa con Suor Maria Troncatti’ (Let’s celebrate with Sister Maria Troncatti) will be staged on Saturday, 18 October, from 3:30 p.m. onwards, at the St John Bosco Institute in the IRO Province of the FMA, It is an event aimed at young people from the FMA and SDB Provinces of Italy, animated by the young people of the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) of Italy.
At 8:45 p.m., the Rector Major will preside over the Prayer Vigil for the Salesian Family, ‘A holiness… that is also for you!’, which will conclude with a goodnight message from the FMA Superior General, Mother Chiara Cazzuola.
On Sunday, 19 October, at 10:30 a.m. the Holy Father Leo XIV will preside over Holy Mass and the Canonisation with the participation, among others, of Salesian Cardinals and Bishops from the Dioceses of Lombardy and Ecuador, the Presidents of the Interprovincial Conferences, a young woman and a missionary representing the young women and FMA of the world, the Mayors of Corteno Golgi (Brescia), the birthplace of the future Saint, and of Sucúa (Ecuador), the small town where Sister Maria lived and died, her great-grandnieces and nephews and other relatives, numerous pilgrims, especially young people, from Lombardy and all over Italy, Ecuador and other parts of the world. There will be a massive presence of FMA and various representatives of the different groups of the Salesian Family at all the events on the calendar.
It will be possible to watch the live broadcast of the Solemn Eucharistic Concelebration starting at 9:45 a.m. on the Vatican News YouTube channel.
On the afternoon of 19 October, at the FMA Generalate, the Rector Major will preside over the celebration of Vespers. The evening will continue with a celebration, which will be attended by all those gathered in Rome for the occasion.
On Monday, 20 October, at 11:00 a.m. in the Paul VI Hall, the pilgrims gathered for the canonisation of the seven new saints will be received in audience by Pope Leo XIV.
Finally, at 5 p.m., at the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime will preside over the solemn Eucharistic Celebration of thanksgiving for the Salesian Family. Concelebrating will be Archbishop Andres Carrascosa Coso, Apostolic Nuncio to Ecuador, Bishop Néstor Montesdeoca, Apostolic Vicar of Méndez, Ecuador, Bishop Pierantonio Tremolada, Bishop of Brescia, Fr Fabio Attard, Rector Major of the Salesian Congregation, bishops and priests from the dioceses of Ecuador and Italy.
