(Salesian Polytechnic, Machida Tokyo) – In 2021, Mr. Soyoshi Kawashima, a fifth-year student in the Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering collaborated with Bit Trade One Co., Ltd. in an industry-academia collaboration, and at that time, an autonomous driving robot kit was sold. 

 

In an environment where face-to-face consultations were difficult due to the corona crisis, we were able to manufacture it into a clear shape through many online meetings and email exchanges between the company and students. Salesian Polytechnic is proud of the students who actively worked in such an environment and produce results.

 

In addition, a course using this robot kit is also offered in the experience-based entrance to the Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering.

 

“An Introduction to electronic work! the Automatic traveling robot kit D3BV” is an introductory robot kit for users who want to become familiar with electronic work. This kit, jointly developed with the students and teachers of the Salesian College of Technology, allows you to create a robot that runs automatically just by soldering resistors and capacitors. An assembly manual is also included, so even those who are new to soldering can practice with confidence.

I was involved in various processes, and especially cooperated with the development of the circuit part. I referred to the “Mr. Spot-billed Duck Robot” and “Automatic Driving Robot Car” from the Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, but the circuit configuration is completely new.

There were few opportunities to meet directly due to the influence of Corona. There was a time when we only had the opportunity to talk online about once or twice a month. Also, it was difficult to balance with school assignments.

In terms of “commercialization”, it was necessary to consider various aspects such as cost, and I think it was a good experience to proceed with development to keep up with the ever-increasing demands.

In this internship, I believe that the students were able to experience design that considers the ease of assembly and the ease of procuring parts, which should be considered when actually designing a product. There were times when things didn’t go smoothly due to the impact of the new coronavirus, but we were able to trace the path to commercialization, so that we can spread the solutions born from the free ideas of the students to the world in the future. I hope it will.

Regarding products, many of our robot kits are equipped with a microcomputer and operate by program, but the feature of the D3BV released this time is that it performs autonomous operation only with a circuit without a microcomputer. I feel that it is a highly attractive product because you can create a robot that can perform interactive movements as soon as it is completed just by soldering.

As one of the social implementation education, we have been promoting this initiative jointly with Bit Trade One Co., Ltd., which has its head office and technology center in the neighboring city of Sagamihara. In the first year, I started with a long-term internship as a kickoff, and in the second year, I worked in the form of industry-academia collaboration. The “Automatic Driving Robot Kit “D3BV”” that has been released this time is based on the “Automatic Driving Robot Car” and “Karugamo-kun Robot” that have been implemented at our school’s trial admission, and Mr. Kawashima, who is in charge, developed the original circuit. did.

 

During the development, we considered the availability of parts, cost, workability, etc., and built the product. This kind of experience in product development is something that cannot be obtained through normal “manufacturing activities” such as robot contests, and I believe that it was a very valuable opportunity for the students. We will continue to promote these activities in the future. In addition to being sold at the official online shop, this robot kit will be available for hands-on experience at our school.
